Energy Analyst Internship

Job Title: Energy Analyst Intern
Location: Leeds HQ
Duration: 3-month internship
Salary: Paid Internship

Reporting To: Head of Commercial and Head of Trading and Risk

About the Role

Smarta Energy is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated intern to join our team as an Energy Analyst Intern. This is a hybrid role that blends commercial pricing experience with market research and analysis, offering hands-on exposure to the UK energy sector.

The internship is designed to give a graduate-level candidate practical insight into two key areas of energy consultancy:

  • Pricing Analyst Support: working with our Commercial Team to prepare quotes, liaise with suppliers, and coordinate client pricing requests.

  • Market Analyst Support: working with our Trading and Risk Team to research UK electricity and gas markets, track trends, and support the communication of insights to internal stakeholders and clients.

This is an ideal opportunity for a graduate looking to explore energy markets, commercial pricing, and strategic communication in a supportive, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily pricing operations: help format quotes, follow up with suppliers, and log communications

  • Monitor and research energy market developments (e.g. commodity prices, demand trends, policy changes)

  • Summarise and communicate key market movements in internal briefings and weekly reports

  • Use Excel to analyse pricing data and interpret supplier and market trends

  • Assist in the preparation of client-facing content and internal updates

  • Collaborate with analysts to investigate contract performance or anomalies

  • Help maintain internal data sources and reference materials used in reporting

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Confident communicator with strong written skills and attention to detail

  • Solid Excel skills for data handling, formatting, and analysis

  • Comfortable summarising complex information clearly for others

  • Organised, curious, and proactive, with an interest in market research

  • Professional attitude and ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Desirable:

  • Interest in energy markets, policy, or trading

  • Familiarity with coding languages such as Python, SQL, VBA, or data visualisation libraries

  • Experience writing reports, articles, or structured research (e.g. university coursework or blog)

  • Graduate from a top 20 UK university (or strong academic performance in a relevant field)

What You’ll Gain

  • Practical experience across both commercial and research-focused roles in energy

  • Insight into energy pricing, market trends, and stakeholder communication

  • Opportunities to develop Excel, reporting, and analytical skills

  • Mentorship from experienced analysts and exposure to real-world client challenges
